Welcome to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Wanderers web site. The cabin shown above is located on Haymock Lake (T7-R11) in Piscataquis County, Maine. It is where the club is home based. We decided to put up this site to keep people informed of issues concerning the North Maine Woods and to give people a place to find out what events might be happening in the area. You will also be able to find out what the weather is for the area and we are also providing some wonderful photos taken by many of the snowmobilers and others who have traveled the Great North Woods. Snowmobiling - The area offers the largest snowmobile trail system in the United States.
ATV -
Some of the best ATV trails in the country are located right here in Fort Kent. A recently renovated railroad track bed has been converted into
an ATV/walking/snowmobile trail. The trail is known as "The Heritage Trail" and goes from Market St in Fort Kent 18 miles west to St. Francis. Moose - hunting permits are issued by the state through a lottery system. The season for hunting moose is in late
September and early October. For more information about moose hunting in Maine visit http://www.state.me.us/ifw/hunttrap/moose.htm. Besides moose
Maine is an excellent place for hunting deer, game birds, rabbit and bear. Open season dates for the previous game are generally late August through December. Ice & Open Fishing - On our many nearby lakes, rivers and brooks. Aroostook has regulations for both ice and open season fishing. You are even able to purchase your fishing or hunting license on-line. Biathlon - A site designed for world-class competition the Maine Winter Sports Center has hosted the 2000 Jr. National Biathlon Championships and the 2000 North American, Canadian, and U.S. National Biathlon Championships. Sled Dog Races - Named the Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races there are three different races a 250, 60 and a 30 mile race. The 250 race is the longest and highest caliber race in the eastern United States. It is a joy to see all the dogs as they begin their day at the heart of downtown Fort Kent. |
